The Spring Equinox is a beautiful moment to refresh our homes, our energy and our intentions for the season ahead. I’m delighted to welcome guest writer and artist Lori Ann Bellissimo to the Rock + Realm Journal this month.

Lori Ann’s reflections on sacred spaces feel especially fitting at this time of year, when the returning light invites us to clear away the old and create environments that support growth, creativity and wellbeing.

A Spring Equinox Guide to Intentional Living

Guest Journal
By Lori Ann Bellissimo

The Spring Equinox, falling on 20th March this year, is a profound moment of cosmic balance and hopefully you’ve been feeling the build up of energy. As the Earth tilts toward the sun, we move from the internal, reflective wrapped cocoon of winter into a season of outward growth and revitalisation. It is the perfect time to spring clean, not just the dust bunnies in our cupboards, our bodies and minds but also our energetic environments.

Creating a sacred space isn't about having a perfect aesthetic; it’s about dedicating a corner of your world to your highest intentions. Whether you have an entire meditation room or just a single shelf, let me guide you through how to weave together art, crystals and a simple ritual to refresh your home this Spring.

The Evolution of a Sacred Space: A Global Journey

I remember the exact moment the term Sacred Space started to resonate for me. It was around 2010; whilst living in the beautiful city of Rome, just sat in a snug corner of my studio with my MacBook on my lap. By then, I had already lived across Toronto, the UK, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, gathering inspiration and "soul-things" from every corner of the globe.

I was streaming a talk by the author Gabrielle Bernstein and as she spoke about intentional environments, I looked around my studio and it hit me: I’ve been doing this my entire life. From my student days in the UK to my professional years in Asia, my workspace was always more than just a place to paint. It was a collection of intentions that grounded me and gave me the inspiration to fully express myself. But the roots go back even further than my travels.

What is a sacred space in the home?

A sacred space is a dedicated place in your home created with intention to support your wellbeing, energy and connection to yourself. It does not need to be elaborate. A windowsill, bedside table, altar or quiet reading nook can all become a home sanctuary when styled with meaning, ritual tools and objects like crystals that help you feel grounded and restored.

As a young art student growing up in Toronto, I was already a collector of "things with soul." Long before I understood the mechanics of energy, I’d gather stones and treasures, placing them around my room with a precision I didn't yet have a name for. I’d spend my pocket money on incense and candles, transforming my bedroom into a fragrant sanctuary to fuel my creativity.

Of course, my mother didn’t always see the "sacred" in my space. I lost count of the times she’d walk through the front door of our Toronto home, sniff the air suspiciously and yell up the stairs "Lori! What’s that smell? Are you smoking something?!" Little did she know I was just deep-cleansing my canvases and my spirit with a particularly potent stick of Nag Champa! I won’t say anymore…

Why We're Drawn to Sacred Anchors

In my work at Aether and Ground, I believe that art and objects are more than decoration — they are frequencies. When you place a piece of soul-led artwork or a high-vibration crystal in your home, it acts as a visual and energetic anchor.

This sense of connection is something I feel deeply every day here in Cornwall. I am incredibly fortunate to live just a stone's throw from an ancient stone circle, situated right on one of the earth's powerful ley lines. Living on these veins of the earth, where energy has been held and honoured for millennia, has profoundly changed how I view my own studio. It’s a reminder that we are never just occupying a room; we are part of a wider, ancient grid of energy. My home at the Sunday School House is my way of tapping into that heritage, bringing that grounded, ancient power into a modern, creative life.

Cornish ancient standing stones

As I write this from my desk, I am looking at a living testament to this lifelong habit. To my right sits a stunning piece of rare Quartz entwined with Black Obsidian — a treasure I was drawn to at a Devon market a few years back. It helps maintain the balance between my partner and I, providing much-needed protection from the technological noise and EMFs of our modern lives, whilst keeping us anchored to the sacred land beneath us.

Alongside it is a mixed landscape of energy-clearing tools from Rock + Realm. My Selenite Charging Plate sits ready to reset my jewellery, while my Balance + Tranquility and Seven Chakra collections serve as daily reminders to stay aligned with the higher frequencies I feel pulsing through the ley lines. I even have a Metatron’s Cube Crystal Grid set up, resting near raw bits of local Quartz I’ve unearthed right here in my garden — miniature standing stones of my own making. I’ll share more about The Fae in the garden soon.

I’ve also got my favourite antique fairies book open. I picked it up just today to see if I could order some new seeds, always making sure the "elementals" in our garden feel protected and welcome. To my left, the next generation of growth is literally hatching; I have seedlings of lavender and lemon balm starting to sprout. Some of these herbs will eventually be dried and burned (sorry again, Mum!), while others will simply provide the natural aromatherapy of the Cornish breeze.

Over the years I’ve realised that sacred spaces don’t need to be elaborate or perfectly curated. They simply need to hold intention. The Spring Equinox offers a beautiful moment to refresh the energy in our homes and reconnect with what matters most. If you’d like to create or renew your own sanctuary this season, here are four gentle ways to begin.

Four Steps to Refresh Your Sanctuary & Reset Your Energy This Spring

It's natural to start to feel an awakening as we transition gently from one season to the next, and the Winter to Spring transition is the most exciting as it promises fresh starts and heralds one of the most abundant times of the year. You can honour the season of renewal in simple ways in your own home, creating sacred spaces that act as an anchor for your seasonal intentions.

If you’d like a little support in creating your sanctuary this season, you can explore the Rock + Realm Spring Equinox collection of crystals and ritual tools, thoughtfully curated to help you refresh your space and energy.

How do you create a sacred space for the Spring Equinox?

To create a sacred space for the Spring Equinox, begin by clearing stagnant energy from your home, then bring in symbols of renewal such as fresh flowers, seedlings, candles, crystals or meaningful objects. Focus on creating a calm, intentional environment that reflects balance, growth and the return of light.

1. Clearing the Winter Stagnation

Before bringing in the new, we must release the old. Spring is the ultimate season for smoke cleansing or sound clearing.

2. Layering Your Spring Altar

An altar is a physical manifestation of your goals. For a Spring refresh, try incorporating the four elements:

  • Earth: A bowl of fresh soil or those seedlings I mentioned; lavender and lemon balm are wonderful for peace and clarity.

  • Air: A feather or high-quality incense to represent new ideas.

  • Fire: A green or yellow organic beeswax candle to symbolise the returning sun.

  • Water: A small dish of fresh water (perhaps with a drop of rose oil) for emotional flow.

3. Working with "The Shadow and the Light"

Spring is about balance. Just as my Clear Quartz crystal is entwined with Black Obsidian, our intentional spaces should reflect both our protection and our growth. Use a Black Obsidian or Tourmaline crystal at the base of your sacred space to keep you grounded while you reach for the light of new projects.

4. Setting Intentions for the "Garden of the Mind"

Use your sacred space to journal on these prompts during the Spring Equinox seasonal shift:

  • What seeds am I planting in my life this season?

  • What habits am I "weeding out" to make room for my dreams?

These small, intentional shifts create more than just a beautiful space — they shape how you feel within it. By clearing, layering, balancing and setting intention, you begin to create a sanctuary that supports your energy, your focus and your growth as the season unfolds.

Bringing the Sacred into Every Day

From the vibrant streets of Toronto and the bustling hubs of Asia to the historic studios of Rome, my journey has been a long road home. Now, back in the UK and settled in the quiet, ancient energy of the Cornwall coast, I’ve learned that we are the architects of our own energy.

Sacred space is never static. It evolves with us, just as the seasons do. The Equinox reminds us that balance is always possible — between rest and action, protection and expansion, shadow and light. By tending to the spaces around us with care and intention, we create environments that quietly support our growth every day.

Whether you're placing a single seedling on a windowsill or hanging a piece of intentional art on your wall, you are claiming your space and completing your own circle. You may also find support in working with seasonal crystals and ritual tools, thoughtfully chosen to align with the energy of the Spring Equinox.

However you choose to bring the sacred into your home this Spring, may it support your growth, your balance and your sense of connection to the world around you.

Happy Spring Equinox!
