Sparkly, colourful and full of possibility. You’re curious about crystals and how they can support your wellbeing, but aren’t quite sure where to begin.

In this Crystals 101 guide, I’ll show you how to naturally incorporate crystals into your daily wellbeing practices in a way that feels simple, grounded and genuinely supportive.

I’m Laura, founder of Rock + Realm, and a lifelong crystal lover. I still remember how overwhelming it felt when I first started collecting and using crystals. There’s so much information out there and it’s not always clear what actually works in everyday life.

The truth is, crystals don’t need to be complicated. They work best when they become part of your natural rhythm, gently supporting your energy, your mindset and your environment.

How do crystals support your wellbeing?

Crystals… they’re just pretty rocks, right?

Well yes, they are undeniably beautiful and I’d always encourage using them in your home as a way to bring a little more of nature indoors. But they can also offer something deeper when used with intention.

Even something as simple as placing a quartz cluster on your coffee table can shift how a space feels. Our environment plays a powerful role in our mood, and when we surround ourselves with natural, meaningful objects, it can help us feel calmer, more grounded and more connected.

At a more energetic level, everything in the universe, including us, is constantly vibrating. When we feel well, balanced and at ease, our energy tends to feel more harmonious. During times of stress or overwhelm, that balance can feel disrupted.

Crystals are formed with highly ordered structures, which gives them a stable and consistent energy. Many people find that working with crystals helps them feel more centred, grounded or uplifted, depending on the stone they choose.

In practice, this often looks like simple, everyday use. Keeping crystals in your home, carrying them with you or wearing crystal jewellery so their energy stays close throughout the day.

When I asked my Instagram community, over 80% said they use crystals as part of their self-care routine at least some of the time, with many incorporating them regularly into their wellbeing practices.

And the best part? You don’t need complicated rituals to feel the benefit. Small, intentional moments are more than enough.

How to use crystals in your wellbeing practices

Crystals can be woven into your day in small, meaningful ways. From calming anxious moments to enhancing mindfulness, these simple practices will help you connect with your crystals and get the most from their energy.

1. Using crystals for calm and grounding

When life feels overwhelming, one of the simplest ways to use crystals is as a grounding tool.

If you’re anything like me, anxiety often shows up as restless energy. Fidgeting, overthinking, feeling unable to settle. Having something physical to hold can make a real difference.

Crystals work beautifully as worry stones or fidget tools. Holding a small stone in your hand, noticing its texture, weight and temperature, gently brings your focus back to the present moment.

The benefit isn’t just from the crystal energy, but also from taking a moment of mindfulness. You’re giving your mind something to anchor to.

Tumblestones are perfect for this. Small enough to carry in your pocket or bag, they’re easy to reach for whenever you need a moment of calm. You might also keep a small bowl of crystals on your desk or by your front door, choosing one intuitively as you move through your day.

2. Using crystals in meditation and mindfulness

Crystals can also be a beautiful companion to meditation or quiet moments of mindfulness.

If meditation feels intimidating, keep it simple. You don’t need long sessions or complicated techniques. Just a few minutes of intentional stillness is enough.

Try this:

1. Choose a crystal you feel drawn to
2. Sit comfortably and take a few slow, deep breaths
3. Observe the crystal. Its colour, shape and details
4. Close your eyes and notice how it feels in your hand
5. Breathe slowly and simply be present

This gentle practice helps you connect with both the crystal and yourself. It’s less about doing it perfectly and more about creating space to pause.

3. Combining crystals with essential oils

Crystals and essential oils work beautifully together. Both come from the earth, both support wellbeing and together they can create a more immersive, sensory experience.

I’ve personally used aromatherapy for years as part of my own wellbeing, and combining it with crystals feels like a natural extension of that practice.

You might:

  • Diffuse essential oils while holding a crystal during meditation
  • Pair a pocket crystal with your favourite pulse point oil
  • Place a few drops of oil onto rough, water-safe crystals in a bowl -  Select porous crystals such as Amazonite, Howlite or Sodalite

The alchemy of using essential oils and crystals together is amplified when you harmonise their properties. Choose combinations that feel aligned with how you want to feel. Try these complementary pairings of crystals and essential oils:

  • Relaxation – Lavender with Amethyst
  • Stress relief – Clary Sage with Howlite
  • Energy and positivity – Citrus oils with Citrine
  • Balance – Geranium with Moonstone

4. Simple ways to use crystals in daily life

Crystals are incredibly versatile, which is part of their magic. They don’t need to sit on a shelf. They can become part of your everyday routines.

You might try:

  • Keeping crystals around your home to support the energy of each space
  • Using a crystal sphere for simple hand massage or grounding
  • Placing crystals around your yoga or meditation space
  • Adding crystals to your bath or self-care rituals
  • Using crystal tools like rollers or gua sha as part of your skincare routine

You can also incorporate crystals into your home styling using natural elements such as wooden bowls, creating a space that feels calm, intentional and connected to nature.

You don’t need to do everything at once.

Start with one or two practices that feel natural to you. The more you use your crystals, the more intuitive it becomes.

Make crystals part of your everyday wellbeing

Crystals aren’t about perfection or complicated rituals. They’re about connection.

Connection to yourself, to your environment and to the natural world.

Whether you’re holding a stone during a stressful moment, placing crystals around your home or pairing them with other wellbeing practices, it’s these small, consistent moments that create the biggest shift over time.
