Rock + Realm Founder Laura

Hey, I’m Laura, founder of Rock + Realm, an ethical UK-based crystal and spiritual wellness shop.

Each year around Earth Day, I take a moment to pause, reflect and share a little behind the scenes of what we’re building together.

This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, feels especially fitting.

Because if there’s one thing this journey has shown me, it’s that real change doesn’t come from grand gestures or overnight transformation. It comes from small, intentional choices, made consistently, over time.

And more importantly… it comes from all of us.

The Ripple Effect: How Small Sustainable Choices Create Real Environmental Impact

Rock + Realm's Earth Day 2026 environmental impact snapshot

Since starting our tree donations, the Rock + Realm community has helped to plant over  2,500 trees and since Earth Day 2025 we've also removed 1,561 ocean bound plastic bottles from the environment.

When I really stop to think about that, it still surprises me. 2,500 mangrove trees equates to roughly one hectare of forest — that's 10,000 square metres of restored coastline made possible by Rock + Realm's wonderful customers. A living, breathing ecosystem that now exists because of thousands of small, conscious decisions.

Alongside this, plastic is being intercepted before it reaches our oceans, supporting communities and reducing pollution at the source. In just one year, we’ve passed a milestone of over 1,500 plastic bottles removed, which makes me incredibly proud and really demonstrates the ripple effect in action.

One order. One choice. One small act of intention.

Multiplied across a community.

Our Environmental Impact: Trees Planted and Plastic Removed Through Conscious Shopping

How does shopping small make a difference?

Every Rock + Realm order and every email subscriber contributes to verified environmental initiatives across Kenya, Madagascar, Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Through our partners GoodAPI and Veritree, we support:

  • Mangrove reforestation restoring ecosystems and supporting coastal communities
  • Ocean Bound Plastic removal programmes that intercept ocean-bound waste in vulnerable regions like Indonesia and the Philippines

Each contribution is tracked, verified and audited, ensuring that the impact is real, measurable and transparent.

Individually, it may feel small. Collectively, it becomes something powerful.

Mangrove reforestation - With your support, we are restoring the mangrove forests in Kenya. The goal of this project is to empower the impoverished coastal community to break the poverty cycle. In restoring the mangrove estuary, which is rich in biodiversity, this project will provide fishing grounds for local people. This helps to create additional income streams, including sustainable harvests from the mangrove forests. The restored forests will also help to stabilise coastlines, acting as a vital line of defence to protect the land and the communities during tropical storms.

Ocean Bound Plastic Removal - Stopping plastic from within 50km of an ocean-bound waterway or coastline reduces its likelihood of flowing into the ocean. This in turn helps to protect marine life, microorganisms and endangered species from plastic pollution. Each step in the plastics life cycle — extraction, transport, manufacture and disposal — emits massive amounts of greenhouse gases, mostly CO2. Ocean Bound plastic is turned into plastic feedstock which enables a circular economy and reduces need for virgin plastic material.

Progress Not Perfection: The Reality of Running a Sustainable Small Business

If I’m honest, sustainability has felt very different in practice compared to how I first imagined it. When I started Rock + Realm in 2020, I knew I wanted to build something responsible and value-driven — a business that offered meaningful products to be treasured for a lifetime, not just consumed and disposed of based on trends.

But as the business has grown, so has my awareness of the impact behind it. Packaging, in particular, became the most tangible reminder. There’s something quite confronting about seeing the physical evidence of waste, even when your intentions are good. It’s what pushed me to start asking better questions:

  • Can this be reduced?
  • Can it be reused?
  • Can it be reimagined?
  • Is there a more responsible option?

Over time, that focus has expanded into initiatives like tree planting and plastic removal. But the biggest shift has been in mindset. Because the truth is, in a product-based business, zero impact isn’t realistic.

Crystals take millennia to form. Supply chains are complex. Materials need to be transported. Products need to be protected.

So for me, it’s no longer about chasing perfection. It’s about being conscious. Making better decisions where I can and continuing to learn and improve along the way. It's important to me to be ethical in business and so I've embedded this intentionality into Rock + Realm's ethos:

  • Conscious sourcing
  • Respect for people and the planet
  • Reducing waste where possible
  • Making better decisions over time
  • Contributing to our local community

Because progress, however small, is what creates change.

Sustainable Packaging Choices: Reducing Waste in an E-commerce Business

Over the past year, one of the changes I’m most proud of has been evolving our packaging into something that feels less disposable and more intentional. Instead of paper sachets that are used once and thrown away, many of our jewellery pieces and smaller crystals now arrive in Rock + Realm reusable cotton pouches and drawstring bags.

The idea was simple. If something feels beautiful, useful and well made, you’re far more likely to keep it, use it again and give it a second life. Cotton felt like the right choice because it’s durable, long-lasting and has a softer, more considered finish. Something that can travel with you, be repurposed or even passed on as part of a gift.

Today, over 95% of our packaging is plastic-free or reusable and 100% for those products I create in-house. That said, there are still areas that aren’t perfect.

Some products arrive to us already packaged in plastic to keep them safe in transit. Delicate crystals like selenite, silver jewellery that needs protection from tarnishing or items like ritual sprays. In all cases, I never buy additional plastic packaging ourselves and instead reuse what we receive rather than sending it to landfill.

It’s not the 100% plastic-free ideal I’d love to achieve, but it’s a conscious step in the right direction.

How to Reuse Jewellery and Crystal Pouches

One of the most beautiful things about reusable packaging is how easily it becomes part of your everyday rituals. Rock + Realm's cotton pouches are designed to be kept, not discarded. And there are so many simple ways to use them.

How to reuse your Rock + Realm pouches

  • Jewellery storage for everyday use
  • Travel pouches for holidays or weekends away
  • Crystal kits for your handbag or bedside
  • Gift bundles for friends
  • Ritual pouches with crystals and keepsakes
  • Calming travel companions for flights

For me, they’re a staple when travelling — perfect for keeping jewellery, crystals and small essentials safe.

At home, I also reuse all packaging from deliveries, incorporating it into Rock + Realm parcels wherever possible.

It’s these small, practical choices that quietly reduce waste over time.

Simple Ways to Live More Sustainably in Everyday Life

Sustainability doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s often the simplest habits that make the biggest difference.

  • Reuse packaging before recycling
  • Pick up litter when you see it
  • Garden with wildlife in mind
  • Choose refillable or low-waste products
  • Support local farms and businesses

Start with one small change. Let it become a habit, then build from there. Because small actions, repeated over time, create real change.

Our Future Sustainability Goals: What’s Next for Rock + Realm

Looking ahead, my focus is to continue improving what we already do. This includes refining packaging, exploring digital offerings to reduce physical production and supporting initiatives closer to our sourcing communities. And of course, continuing to grow the forests we’ve already started.

Thank You for Supporting Sustainable and Ethical Small Businesses

Everything we’ve achieved so far has been made possible by this community. Every order. Every thoughtful choice. Every small act of intention.

Together, those actions have created something real; a hectare of coastal mangrove forest, cleaner coastlines and a business that continues to evolve with care.

That’s the power behind “Our Power, Our Planet”.

Warm wishes, Laura image
